cat_rood: (NaNo 2004)
So, NaNoWriMo is done and over with for another year. I have, once again, participated and beaten the challenge, though this year was a bit harder than last year. All the prep work, I think, really paid off last year. I'll have to try it again next year.

Now, I just have to keep the momentum for the rest of the year until next November. That is usually where I have trouble. I love to write, and do it every day. However, I just don't have the monofocus I do during November and I'm not sure how to keep it up. (Suggestions welcome.)

I've used GYWO over on LJ to help motivate me some. Except, I don't think I picked the proper level. I chose 250k, and... I'm at almost 290k now.

I'm hoping to actually write that query letter in the next few days, and get that sent out.

Also, I'm wanting to go back to last year's NaNo and rip into it. Maybe, what I need is to edit something, even if it means a complete crying jag over how bad something is. (And last year's NaNo, though I love it... is bad. I've been reading it the last few days and it's bad.)

I also need to get back in the habit of making playlists, so that I have something that indicates to my brain that now is writing time. Not playing time.

Which means, really getting back into the groove and carving out my writing time. The beginning of the month is always hectic, and this month is no exception. I'm so tired tonight that I'm going to bed as soon as this posts.

Also, since I haven't spoken about them in a while, my other Creative Every Day things:

Knitting is now over 50% done. I need to take pics and post them, but it's coming along. Slowly, but surely. I had to go buy more yarn because I hadn't bought the right amount. I was lucky and could get the exact yarn I needed and will probably have a ton left over which I can use to make something else that matches.

Cross stitch hasn't really been touched in a while and I need to get on that because I want to finish it this year, rather than next.

so, that's a rather long and rambling update, but I figure people are still reading this, so I should give them something to read.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a terrific end of the year. <3

Not... exactly. See, when there's an emergency move, and then added stress (thank you school system) and then more stress... creativity pretty much takes a nosedive. The fact that I was able to get out of bed some days was an accomplishment.

I'm starting to get back into the groove. How did I do that? Well, today, I picked up my geisha cross stitch again and began working on it.

AND I just got to move the hoop finally. So, I'm posting a phone picture.

Picture! )

I promise to get noncrappy phone pics up soon.

I keep promising these and then never following through. Well, after the success of my first knitting project I went on to the second.

Meaning, I have pictures.

A shawl and the beginnings of a Geisha )

I need a crafty type icon.

Because I know you're all dying to know. First, something to regret. The unicorn cross stitch:

Had to be thrown away. A marker leaked on it, and it just wasn't savable. I am sorry to lose it, but... sigh, whatcha gonna do?

But for now... Picture heavy )

This has been your creative update.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I write, I have music going. Music has become such an important part of my writing that when I hear certain songs, my mind immediately flips to the story they're associated with. (Which is a problem when I'm just playing my musical library, and trying to clean, rather than think about writing.)

I do this as a focus and because not having background noise bothers me to the point that I can't write.

Today, I reclaimed my writing space from the layers of clutter and detritus that always seems to spring up around any space where you spend a lot of time. (You should see my portion of the couch. I am ashamed.)

Now, I have the song that flips my brain into writing mode on. It's not working as well, hence this entry. I'm relaxing into the music and want to see where my brain goes.

One thing that's stuck with me, since I wanted to really write was an interview with George Lucas. He once said that he has music (usually classical) on in the background as he writes. I finally felt a little vindicated, because I'd always been told that I couldn't write if I was listening to music. "You can do one or the other, but not both."

Well phooey on them! I can so do both and do do both. It's an awesome thing to see how the music effects my writing.

Now, to admit something:

I failed, completely and totally at NaNoEdMo. Why? Well, many reasons.

1) Steampunk wasn't done. I just couldn't finish it in February.
2) Personal issues reared up and smacked me around, refusing to let me destress and concentrate on the important things (like writing!)
3) New medications. Now, anyone's who ever switched/started medications for any medical condition knows that when you do there's a period of adjustment. Sometimes that period is longer than others. I'm still not adjusted to them, but I'm getting there.

Those are the main reasons. For now, though, I think my brain has settled into steampunk mode and that means that maybe I can finish it before March is over. I'm hoping to anyway.

So, since this is my "creative blog" (Originally, "creative" meant "writing", but since I'm getting into other crafts and stuff, creative blog it is!) I'm using this as a place to hold onto some of the things I want to do.

So, for knitting:

Nob Hill Shawl
Curly Wrap Scarf
Plaza Shawl
Sonata Shawl

That's just for knitting. My cross stitch I need to pick up again. Ah well, back to knitting....
cat_rood: (PORN!)
Since I'm doing that creative thing today, I took a picture of my knitting. Why? Because I finally got to change the color on it, and wanted to show it off. Unfortunately, I can only use my phone, because my camera is missing a cord. So the pics are pretty bad.

Here you go though:

Two pics )

As soon as I find my cord, there will be better pictures. I promise.

So, I'm updating my challenges! Hurray! Aren't you lucky people? And I'm doing it with pictures.

1) Creative Every Day - Well, most days I write, but today, I really worked on the whole 'not just writing' thing. And guess what? I finished my wolf cross stitch! I've decided that next month, I'm going to see about getting it professionally framed! Hurray!

2) 750 Words - Well, even though I write most days, I forget to log in here and plug them in. But, I do write, and I know I do more than 750words!

3) Get Your Words Out - I made last month's check in with a good chunk of wordage, so I think I'm in good shape there.

4) [community profile] origfic_bingo - I haven't looked at this month's card, but that's because I'm working on a novel, and the card is my reward for finishing it... I'm not holding my breath, honestly. But I will most likely look at it soon and decide which prompts to use.

Now, for pictures! Pictures! Of a crafty nature! )

So, there you have it! Now, back to writing.

I thought I'd update everyone on the progress I'm making with my Creative Challenges.

So, here we go:

1. Creative Every Day: Honestly, this challenge is the easiest for me. I write most days, and that's creative, even if I don't really feel it. Also, I knit most days or do cross stitch. I'd really like to work on something more... art related and less fabric/writing. I've always defaulted to those, so maybe I should try something different?

But, to update the knitting and the cross stitch:

Knitting: It's now 16inches long and about that wide. What's it going to be? Well, I finally decided on a scarf/muffler thing. It gets cold here and even if I don't finish it until summer, it will be around for next winter. Which is a good thing.

Cross Stitch: This one I haven't been nearly as diligent about. I finally was able to move my hoop and I've been making some awesome progress, and I can see the end in sight, ya know? But, the wolf is still coming along. Hopefully, I'll finish it before March.

2. 750words: I, somehow, missed two days this month. I'm not sure how. But I did. So, I'm going to keep working on remembering it.

3. Get Your Words Out: Well, I signed up for the 250k challenge, because I know this summer is going to be a bit up in the air. Without today's words, it sits at 25,815. I'm hoping to add even more this afternoon.

4. [community profile] origfic_bingo: I have my second card and the prompts chosen for the little ficlets. Soon, I'll work on those. (Probably Monday when kids will, in theory, have school.)

So, there's the update. I'm sure you're all excited, huh?

Normally, I don't talk about how I get ideas. See, I don't get ideas gradually. I get them in a full on flash. I'll get a fully formed scene, or words scrolling across my eyes like I'm writing them on a screen.

These days, I'm getting so many conflicting ideas, that I'm trying to coalesce some of them into something that will make some sort of sense.

I'm not having much luck with doing that, so this is probably going to be a rambling post.

Ideas currently clogging the brain pan )

So that's my writing ideas right now. Now for a challenge update.

- Cross Stitch: I'm still working on the wolf. It's filled in, even a bit more than what the picture shows. It's a bit slow going because it really is filling in the blanks.
- Knitting: Last night, I managed to drop like three stitches messing around with it. But, I think I fixed that this morning. It's measuring in at 9 3/4in/24.765cm. I usually work on it while the Roomie and I RP, when it becomes too dark to cross stitch. Or, if we're downstairs. Knitting is far more portable.

For now, I think I'm going to go work on some more character descriptions and see what plot really comes out and prods me in the head. For now, it's the best I can do.
cat_rood: (Default)
Alright, so here it is, the promised picture post.

First, the finished cross stitch )

Second, cross stitch to do )

Finally, the knitting )

So, there you have it. The creative challenges that are not on the computer.

I thought I'd do an update today for a few things.

1. Creative Every Day: Today, I finished a small cross stitch. It's now hanging on my cork board with the other two small ones I've done since XMas. but one is done. I'm very proud of that fact. I wrote on my main blog that I wasn't allowed to buy any more cross stitch for a while.

Tomorrow, I'll take pictures of ones I'm working on (and the finished ones, obviously). See, I have about six big ones and two little ones. Okay, so the deal is that I can't buy any more until three big ones and two little ones are done. I've still got the three big ones to do. The two little ones are easy.

I've really begun knitting. A lot. I've got about four to five inches of garter stitch (will also take a picture of this tomorrow). What's it going to be? No idea. I'll figure that out later. I'm just knitting. It'll probably end up being a very thick scarf. And probably a long one, since I'm going to just keep going just because. It's really nice to do while watching TV/movies/listening to music/Live RPing.

2. 750 words: I missed Sunday again. But that's just because I forgot to log in and give them my words. I've been working really hard, though. I'm done with the character outlines, and need to get working on a short story that I'm trying to figure out for an anthology, or maybe I'll send it elsewhere.

3. Get Your Words Out: I'm at 13,3077. That's really close to being on target/ahead, that I'm proud of myself. If I didn't have 750 words, I'd slack off and ignore writing for a few days.

4. [community profile] origfic_bingo: This is the one that I've really been bad at. I haven't done much with this at all this month. I like the prompts. I just have nothing for them right now. Maybe I'll sit down and concentrate on them tomorrow.

So, that's the update for now. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day, writing-wise anyway.

Tomorrow, there might be pictures.

I feel utterly bereft without my IJ. I can't post my daily list of things to do, or mark off yesterday's or even look at which characters are left to do on my latest venture.

This fills me with more woe than you could imagine. I get confused you see. Now I know why I'm constantly overloading my browser with tabs.

Anyway, to bring this back to the writing blog it is:

I missed yesterday's 750words. Only because of IJ. It wouldn't work all day and confused me.

But, my other challenges are going well. I even knitted a little. It's not very good, but it's something.

I'm hoping to remember to blog here about my challenges. Anytime you want to know something, please feel free to ask. As soon as I complete a non-writing project, I'll put up pictures of it. That will make this a creative blog, rather than just a writing blog.

Now, to return to my normal life, and get real life things done today. Including a dentist appointment.

Day 1

Jan. 1st, 2011 09:59 pm
cat_rood: (Arissia)
So, today is Day One of a lot of challenges, for me. And day... 25-ish for another one.

So let's get on with the challenges!

1: Creative Every Day: Well today, I worked on some cross stitch as well as a character profile for another original novel. I hope to cook something tomorrow, and maybe do some more cross stitch. That satisfies this little challenge.

2: 750 Words: Yeah, that whole character profile? That was my words for today.

3: Get Your Words Out: The character history and some RP added to this count for today. I'm at 1,395/250,000. That's only .06%, but I've got plenty of time! It's a good start.

4: [community profile] origfic_bingo: We got cards today! I'm looking forward to working on mine for a little while. I might do that tomorrow, in between working on another Character.

I don't know how often I'll update everyone on these, but feel free to poke me about them. I'm horrible about remembering. So, feel free to poke me if you're curious.

I do plan on putting up pictures of the cross stitch as I finish them. And maybe the knitting I plan to do too. Depends on the youtube videos that I can find.

I've decided I'm doing writing/creative challenges for 2011. So, this is going to be my master list of just what I've signed up for:

Creative Every Day (thanks to [personal profile] finch for pointing it out!)

Now the rules state it doesn't have to be writing, but that's usually my outlet of choice. I'm going to try knitting this year, so, it's time to see about getting that done. Plus, part of my resolutions this year is to finish some cross stitch. Meaning, that I'm going to have to work on things. Plus, with a challenge, I tend to do better. I need to have something to work for. And people to beat. IDEK.

2: 750 words! I actually like this one. It's a small, reasonable goal that pretty much everyone can do. It's only 750 words a day, and that's less than an hour's work, unless I'm really struggling and I'm generally not. It's something to work for, and I have to keep going to get the badges that are offered as accomplishment, you see.

3: Get Your Words Out is a challenge where you sign up for a number (I signed up for 250k) to write over the course of the year. I have a lot of writing ahead of me, but it's possible. There's stories to be written and I need to be writing them. (thanks to [personal profile] kay_brooke!) The info post is here

4: I'll be doing NaNoWriMo again this November. Just like I do every year, because I'm a big old bunch of fail.

5: [community profile] origfic_bingo. Seriously, this helps with backstory and fleshing things out a bit and working around and through things. It's great for cleaning the brain pan out a little. And for getting the creative juices flowing.

I think that's all I'm doing. But gods only know. I might end up signing up for more. I know I'm going to be doing NaNoEdMo in March too. But that's not a challenge so much as a "dear god EDIT that thing!" for me.

Anyone have any others to suggest? I do better with challenges and reasons to be prodded in the Word Processor direction.
